Definition the Digital Twin

A Digital Twin is the digital image of a real existing system, which directly reflects its properties, states and behavior in the real world in its digital model via a bidirectional coupling. Business processes, product information, the behavior of the systems as well as the context and dependencies are stored in a common data model. This allows real systems not only to be planned and simulated, but also optimized and controlled.

In contrast to the Digital Twin, the Digital Shadow is the digital image of relevant operating, status and process data that systems, machines and plants generate during their operation. This is raw data that flows from the real to the virtual object/process with the purpose of creating a real-time enabled evaluation basis.

Integration platform for the intelligent linking of data in the context of the value creation process

The goal of Digital Twins is to enable data exchange over the entire life cycle and across all IT systems, from planning to production and beyond. In addition to the pure networking of all data involved in the value-added process, the prerequisite for complete networking is intelligent contextualization in a semantic model and the linking to specific business logics.
